Daily Procedures
Students are to line up behind the Nursery School upon arrival. No one is to enter the building unless special permission has been given.
When the bell rings, everyone is silent. Students will remain silent as they enter the building and proceed to their classrooms.
Students are then to empty their book bags and take their things (jacket, sweatshirt, book bag, lunch) to their lockers. They should then return quietly to the classroom and get their things ready for first and second periods. Anything for the teacher/office should be on the students’ desks ready to be turned in. Students will sit quietly and wait for prayers/announcements.
During prayers/announcements, everyone is silent and paying attention. No one should be out of his/her seat.
When the bell rings, students should walk quietly to their first period classes. Each change of class is silent. (Grades 5-8)
Morning Recess (Grades 5-8)
Morning recess will be in the classroom. Students should come in from second period, and put their books away. They will then use the restroom, wash their hands and get a snack. They may sit and talk with their friends during recess. When the bell rings, all trash will be thrown away, and students should return to their seats and pack for third and fourth periods.
Resource Time (11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.)
(Grades 3-8)
Only band and chorus members may leave to meet with Mrs. Pfefferle, until further notice. Everyone else is to stay in the classroom and work quietly. Students may read a book, work on a project, or use reference materials to complete research. Homework may not be completed during this time. This time is also designated for extra help that a student may need in a particular subject. Furthermore, as the year gets underway, this time may be used for club meetings (ex. Senate, newspaper,
yearbook).
Lunch (Grades 5-8)
After prayers, students will use the restroom, wash their hands and get their lunches from their lockers. If a student has ordered lunch, slips will be handed out when he/she returns to the room. On days when lunch is downstairs, students are asked to return to the room
and line up quietly. If lunch is in the classroom, students may sit down and begin eating.
Whether lunch is downstairs or in the classroom, students are to remain seated until they are asked to throw away their trash. When the teacher instructs them to do so, students are to throw away their trash and clean the table. Students will be asked at random to wipe the tables. They must do it without complaint.
No one may leave the cafeteria without written permission handed to the teacher on duty. When it is time to go outside, students will follow the teacher through the downstairs front doors. No one may leave on his or her own.
(Please remember that grades 1-4 play outside, and then they come inside to
eat. Grades 5-8 eat, and then they play outside).
Outside Recess
All students, adults, and equipment should be treated with respect. No one will be allowed back inside for equipment or to use the restroom. All equipment will be distributed on a first come, first served basis.
When the bell rings (12:35 for grades 1-4, 12:55 for grades 5-8), students are to freeze and be silent. When the second bell rings, they are to walk silently to their lines. No one is to play with any playground equipment from that point on. If a student is holding the equipment at the sound of the second bell, he or she will return it to the bin.
Students will quietly return to their classrooms.
SSR (Silent Sustained Reading) 1:00-1:15 (Grades 1-7)
Students are to silently read during this time period. No homework is to be completed at this time.
Dismissal
When the bell rings, students are to return to their classrooms for prayers. After prayers, teachers will dismiss students to their lockers to get their things. Once the students have packed all of the books they will need for the night, they are to sit and quietly occupy themselves until their lines are called.
The only students who may be out of their seats during this time are those who are responsible for end of the day duties.
When a student’s line is called, he or she will quietly exit the building.
Following these procedures will ensure that each student has a productive and safe day. Your cooperation is expected and appreciated!
We will not tolerate:
(Grades 1-8)
• Disrespect (talking back, eye rolling, comments under the breath) toward ANY adult.
• Disrespect (teasing, gossiping about, etc.) toward any fellow students.
• Disrespect toward school property. This includes drawing on the desks, drawing in/on books, digging holes in the desks with pens or pencils, sitting on the radiator covers, throwing trash on the ground, etc.
• Chewing gum.
• Wearing sweatshirts during class.
• Shoes that are not uniform appropriate
• Golf Shirts that are not tucked in (Shirts must be tucked in Monday – Thursday).
• Wandering unsupervised without permission.
• Incomplete or missing homework assignments.
• Misbehavior on the school bus.
Uniform Requirements
(Grades 1-8)
The regulation uniform for St. James School is the following:
Girls: Yellow blouse or golf shirt, round neck plaid jumper, navy blue knee socks, and on chilly days, a navy blue sweater. Girls have the option of wearing khaki colored slacks and navy blue golf shirt with St. James logo. Girls in Grades 5-8 may wear the optional plaid skirt and yellow or navy golf shirt with St. James logo which matches the uniform jumper.
Boys: Yellow golf shirt (long or short sleeves) with St. James logo, navy blue dress slacks, navy blue socks, and on chilly days, navy blue sweater. They may not wear “jeans” or their equivalent.
Though there are no regulation shoes, the shoes must be dress shoes (not sneakers), which are tied, give support, and do not have heels higher than an inch.
In the warm weather, students may wear the yellow knit golf shirt with the St. James logo, their gym shorts, white socks, and sneakers. The warm weather option may be worn from the beginning of school in September until October 15th, and again from approximately May 1st until the end of the year.
On gym days, the children wear their gym uniform to school.
Warm weather gym uniform (same dates as above): royal blue tee shirt with St. James logo, navy blue waffle-weave shorts with St. James logo, white socks, and tie sneakers.
Winter gym uniform: navy blue sweat suit with St. James logo, royal blue tee shirt with St. James logo, white socks, and tie sneakers. Only the navy blue sweat shirt with St. James logo may be worn (no other sweat shirts or jackets while in school.)
All hair styles are to be moderate, no “fads”, and not those which draw attention. Children’s hair is to be their natural color. Boys’ hair must be trimmed above the collar of the shirt. Both boys and girls hair should be out of their eyes, and cut in such a manner as to dignify the uniform. Small hair ties and ribbons may be worn. We appreciate your cooperation in keeping all hair styles simple.
Jewelry of any kind is not part of the uniform. Students may, however, wear a Religious necklace or pin and a watch. Boys may not wear earrings. Girls may not wear large or dangling earrings because they are unsafe at recess and during gym. Nail polish may not be worn to school. Boys and girls may wear a bracelet of support for cancer research or the like.
Simple attire helps to eliminate some of the distractions which take students’ attention away from their studies.
Addendum to Code of Conduct
Morning Bell
All students should be in their class line at 8:15 when the morning bell rings. They enter through the back door of school with their teacher. Otherwise, they are marked late and need to go to the office to get a late slip.
Responsible Computer Use
All parents and students must sign the Responsible Use of Technology Policy.
Electronic Paraphernalia
No handheld games, iPods, etc. are permitted in school. If there is a safety issue and parents need a child to have a cell phone for after school contact, the phone is to be OFF in school. If a child is seen with any of the above, the item will be taken and held by the teacher until the end of the day. For a first offense, the item will be returned to the child at dismissal. For a second or greater offense, the item will be held by the teacher until a parent comes in to retrieve it.
